Een verrassende reisgids uit de Dominicus-Themareeks. Nicki Bullinga is lid van de International Arthurian Society en studeerde Keltisch en Mediëvistiek. Zij beschrijft alle plekken die op een of andere manier verbonden zijn met Arthur's naam in Engeland, Wales en Schotland. Veel anekdotes, historische achtergronden en foto's maken dit een heel complete en onderhoudende gids.

De schrijfster is al van jongs af geïnteresseerd in geschiedenis en archeologie. Ze heeft vele jaren zelf meegewerkt aan opgravingen, onder meer in Groot-Brittannië. Haar ervaring met het vak, de mensen die met haar samenwerkten en de vondsten die naar boven kwamen, hebben haar geïnspireerd tot het schrijven van deze gids en twee romans. Haar eerste, Tweestrijd in Wales (2003), gaat over een speurtocht naar een onbekende schat van de legendarische koning Arthur. Daarna verscheen Donkere grond, een thriller. Momenteel werkt zij aan haar derde roman, die zich in Cornwall afspeelt.

## The language of stones

Carter, Robert

Een boek dat niet direkt de Arthurlegende als uitgangspunt heeft maar er wel op voortborduurt. Het boek speelt zich af in een fictief Engeland van de 15e eeuw. De Rozenoorlogen zijn uitgebroken maar er is sprake van de terugkeer van Arthur. Een oudere tovenaar (Merlijn?) en zijn jonge leerling proberen de steencirkel die mensen vroeger behoedde voor oorlog weer op te zoeken. Ze worden tegengewerkt door een vijandige tovenaar. Carter verwijst naar een alternatieve Arthurlegende. Het gegeven doet ook denken aan Tolkien's In de Ban van de Ring. Er zijn inmiddels drie delen verschenen maar er schijnen er in totaal zes te komen! (delen twee en drie heten:  The Giants dance en Whitemantel). De boeken zijn ook in het Nederlands verkrijgbaar.

## The Three Damosels

The story of three damosels from the Golden Age: Vivian, the 15-year-old niece of the Lady Morgan le Fay; Lynett, unwilling bride of the Round Table knight Gaheris; and Ursulet, daughter of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. Er bestaat een vertaling.
 
## Excalibur (Warlord Chronicles 1)

## Enemy of God (Warlord Chronicles 2)
The second book in a trilogy telling the story of Arthur. After one last battle, Arthur will rule a peaceful land. But, unlike Merlin, Arthur has forgotten the Gods, who thrive on chaos. Arthur's plans are thrown into turmoil, as the search for the 13 sacred objects to restore the Gods begins.
## The Winter King (Warlord Chronicles 3)
Derfel, once a captain in Arthur's warband, recalls the days of Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin and Bishop Sansum. But, above all, it tells the story of Arthur, the only man who can hold Uther's throne for its infant heir, and unite Britain's squabbling kingdoms against the enemy.

Ik heb van deze serie genoten. De schrijver legt veel nadruk op krijgstaktieken maar dat is geen enkel bezwaar, het is zelfs erg interessant om te lezen.
 

## Arthur

Lampo, Hubert

Deze Belgische schrijver van magisch realistische romans als De komst van Joachim Stille en Terugkeer naar Atlantis, boeken die ik graag las als Havo scholier. Lampo ontmoette in Zuid-Engeland toevallig de fotograaf Pieter Paul Koster. Uit deze ontmoeting ontstond dit boek. Prachtige, sprookjesachtige foto's van het Engelse landschap verluchten de teksten van Lampo over het ontstaan van de Arthurlegende en de symbolische en historische achtergronden van het verhaal. Een lust voor het oog dit boek!

## Avalon

This is a wonderful, romantic tale, almost a saga. Though the main character is fictional, the story itself is set in an interesting historical period and the details are accurate. Merewyn leaves Cornwall at fifteen, after the death of her mother. She travels into England in the company of Rumon, who is the historical figure Romieux de Provence, shipwrecked on the Cornish coast. Merewyn works for some time at England's royal court and then stays at a nunnery, following the assassination of one unfortunate English king. Fate intervenes dramatically with her life when she has to return to Cornwall after the death of the Abbess of her convent. Anya Seton has woven a charming story around the figure of Rumon, a Cornish saint. Merewyn believes herself descended from the ancient, royal line of King Arthur. This is a sustaining myth in her life. Merewyn's actual parentage is far less romantic and has to do with Viking raids on the Cornish coast. The story of the star-crossed love of Merewyn and Rumon is just one strand of this story. England in the tenth century was subject to periodic invasion from the Norsemen - this is a major part of the plot, which is romantic yet plausible. Merewyn does a great deal of travelling both planned and unexpected, to find her real identity. Onderhoudend, leuke en originele invalshoek.

"A wonderful love story set in the magical times of King Arthur and Camelot."  Voor mij zijn de boeken van Mary Stewart over Arthur de ultieme verromantisering. Erg goed gedaan.

## Sword at Sunset

Sutcliff, Rosemary

Sutcliff schreef een groot aantal prachtige historische verhalen voor de jeugd, die haar boeken helaas nooit echt waardeerden weet ik uit mijn bibliotheekervaring. Jammer want zij bezat de gave veel juiste informatie op een spannende en meeslepende manier te vertellen. Dit boek schreef ze voor volwassenen. Ze zet Arthur neer als een eenling die zijn eigen groep guerilla's leidde tegen de opkomende Saksen,  en als een bastaardzoon die zijn weg probeert te vinden tussen zijn Romeinse en Keltische afkomst. Waarschijnlijk doet dit verhaal meer recht aan de historische Arthur dan veel van de romantische interpretaties.

## The white Mare

Dit boek heb ik net aangeschaft en valt een beetje buiten het Arthur gebeuren, maar het lijkt me eenzelfde sfeer te ademen dus heb ik het opgenomen. Het verhaal speelt in AD 79 in Romeins Schotland (Alba). Een Schotse prinses, Rhiann en een Ierse prins, Eremon, strijden voor het behoud van het Keltische erfgoed. Deze verhalen vormen een serie: The dawn Stag en The Boar Stone zijn de vervolgen in de Dalriada Trilogie. Het boek doet me zeer denken aan de boeken van Juliet Marillier die ik ook erg leuk vond maar die niet veel met Arthur te maken hebben, meer met Keltische sagen en legenden. Ze schreef onder meer de Trilogie van de zeven wateren.

De literaire aanpak van White maakte indruk op me toen ik het las in de jaren 70. Tijd om het boek weer eens te herlezen.

## The skystone

Een serie over de gebeurtenissen voor, tijdens en na koning Arthur. Ik heb deze net aangeschaft dus kan er nog niet veel over zeggen.

Er zijn zes delen in totaal. De nadruk in deze verhalen ligt op de Romeinse overheersing, de verschillen in culturen tussen Britten en Romeinen en de veranderingen die de Saksische invasies met zich meebrachten. De andere delen van deze serie zijn:

The singing sword  (2),  The eagles brood (3), The saxon shore (4), The ford at river's bend en The sorcerer (6). Deze vallen onder de Camulot Chronicles. Hij schreef nog twee boeken in deze serie over Uther en Clothar.
